Silk Exchange Valencia — La Lonja de la Seda

The Silk Exchange Valencia — known in Spanish as La Lonja de la Seda and in Valencian as the Llotja de la Seda — is one of the most magnificent examples of late Gothic civil architecture in Europe. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, this 15th-century merchant hall stands at the heart of Valencia’s historic old town as a testament to the city’s golden age of trade.

What Is the Silk Exchange Valencia?

Built between 1482 and 1533 by architect Pere Compte, the Silk Exchange Valencia served as the official trading hall for the prosperous Valencian silk merchants. At the height of its power in the 15th and 16th centuries, Valencia was one of the most important commercial cities in the Mediterranean world, and the Lonja de la Seda was where silk, spices, olive oil, and precious goods changed hands under the soaring twisted columns of its iconic Sala de Contratación (Trading Room).

Architecture of La Lonja de la Seda

The building is composed of three main sections: the Sala de Contratación (Hall of Commerce), with its breathtaking helical columns rising 17 metres high; the Consulado del Mar (Consulate of the Sea), which housed the maritime trade tribunal; and the Torre (Tower), used as a prison for insolvent merchants. The Courtyard of Orange Trees connects these spaces and offers one of the most peaceful corners of Valencia’s city centre.
